Following Music: The Joy Ride

I realized I wanted to play the drums when I was 3 years old. It was seeing Vinnie Paul playing drums in the “Cemetery Gates” video. From then on, I hit on everything that I could. Chairs, tables, my brother, friends, you name it. It just became a drum. I love music too but I am drawn to the drums first and foremost.

I went through school band and hated it. I am not a fan of music being so restricted. From there I got my first drum set, which took me to places I could only dream about. I got to open for national acts, play festivals, play bars, break online radio records, and so much more. The times weren’t always fun and easy going.

In 2010 I quit a band. I will not go into all of it but I thought that I was done. That band almost killed me. I hated everything, including myself. There were sections of that time that I didn’t touch or even look at the drums. I just couldn’t. There I happened to go to guitar center and everything changes.

In 2012 I bought an electric drum set.  I had just moved into an apartment and needed to be quiet but the itch came back. I needed to play the drums again. The learning curve was steep and it still doesn’t feel like a real drum. The fact is, I can play again. By the end of that year I was in a Viking metal band and it had dissolved.

All was not over, I decided to build a studio in my apartment. I still can’t believe that it’s really a thing in my life. I can make music whenever I want. It is one of the most liberating things a musician can have. I also started teaching myself guitar and bass because Of my new goals. I want to write an album that only has me on it. That would be amazing! However, things have taken a twist and now I have The Local Music Revolution.

I started the podcast because I wanted to talk to my friends about music. Recording it sounded fun so I went with it. Before I knew it the idea took off on it’s own and now I have a podcast that is fairly successful; more successful than I imagined.

I know its long winded but my point is being made. You have to be ok with going for the ride. Music isn’t just one hill and you’ve seen it all. There are many twists and turns. You might end up doing something that you never thought you would do. Like writing a blog post for and editing a podcast. You never know; just enjoy the ride.

Drugs and booze

this happened

Recently, one of My favorite Bands had what all media Sources Calla Meltdown on stage. More Recently, there has been talk that alcholhad a part to Play in it. Now, I do drink on occasionBut not when music is involved. Personally, I feel numbto theexpirence. I don’t really about the others in the band as long as the drinking doesn’t getIn the way of progress. It Better not get in the way, .

There are many arguments that are for Drinking or drugs. The one I hate the most is, that it helps get the creative Juices flowing. I dont’get the Idea Behind this! Drugs and alcohol lowers inhibition! It lowers your ability to see that your off time or you’re not playing to your ability. Why would you do that to yourself and your fans? I don’t get it. To, me it just cheapens the experience of the music and the flow.

Hard rock and Metal in the mainstream

I get it…

You don’t want your favorite band to get bigger than you. Right now, they are your secret. You can keep them in your in your pocket. That’s fine. I have felt that way many times before BUT everything changes. We all evolve and move forward. So should the bands. Don’t be hard on them for advancing! That is what a sub-culture like metal needs

 

Selling out or buying in?

                When bands hit milestones they tend to lose some fans. It’s a sad, unfortunate process but it happens. It becomes cool to hate these bands. We saw this when Metallica put out “One” and when the put out EVERYTHING after “ …And Justice for All”. We also saw this when Slayer was found out, Oops, the satanic gimmick was in fact just a gimmick! They are boring dudes! They also just happened to make music a career for 30+ years! Bands get big and their “True Fans” become , well, not fans. It is something that continues to baffle me!

The need for flag bearers

Rock and Metal are sub-cultures. Pop is really short for Popular culture. This is when popstars make millions a year and metal just struggles to limp by. There are rock and metal bands that are a bridge to the gap. Foo Fighters, Ozzy, AC/DC, Avenged Sevenfold and Five Finger Death Punch are some that have that ability. These bands are flying the flag of our culture! They are acceptable to most. We need to have that and be proud of the ones that make it that far.

Why?

Because, as long as we have musicians within the eyes of the pop culture audience , we can move and expand.

Writing Styles

Writing Styles

When I started in music I was in regular school band. I couldn’t stand it and I cannot stand playing someone else’s music. That’s just my personality. Even back then I wanted to write my own music. Since then I have been in many different bands and in many different writing scenarios.

There are many ways to write a song and there are many different structures for a song. The thing is, the way a song comes together is subjective. Whatever works for you!

When I was in bands, I would jam or write with them. I let the individual musicians come up with their part and try to make constructive critiques. Now, it’s a different story. I’m by myself and write everything.

On my first album I was learning everything and I was telling myself I could do it. I started with drums and didn’t use a metronome. I can see now where all the problems are but I did it and I learned. That was exciting time for me.

During the writing for the Creation EP and The Pawn and The King, I did the same thing with the drums and no metronome. This time the guitars sound more confident and the bass can even be heard more.

For the newest album I started writing lyrics first. I wanted to know exactly what the feeling of the song was going to be. Then I spent a few months relearning how to play to metronome. That was the hardest part. It took all of my patience.

When I finally started writing I worked on guitar demos that had a click track behind it. With that I went to the drums. I would spend as long as I needed on the drums. If it didn’t feel right , I would go back and change it.

Once the drums were tracked I would work on my guitars. The tone was set before anything. I would hook up my DI box and amp so that I could get clear direct and distorted signals. Bass was DI to the interface. Last thing would be vocals. I used an SM57 and an XM990 to get the vocals. That is how I wrote and recorded Fallout.

Lifestyle VS Addiction

The is a song from a band called Crossfade called “Cold”. It is a really good song but the video gets me every time. It shows the singer neglecting his girlfrends for music. It alwo shows cables in the wock drawer and a guitar in the bed. Insignificant to most but very familiar to musicians. I, being a drummer, had and still have drums everywhere in my apartment. That is just the nature of the beast.

The bigger problem is the neglect of everything else in life. I have been there. When I was in a working band my brain really had only one speed, music. I did neglect a lot but I always made it a point of having my family enjoy all of the thing I was doing to. The extra seats were always offered to family before anyone else.

This, however, still happens. I fear that my wife is the one that gets the worst of it. She is and always has been very supportive but sometimes I go to far. I can’t help it. It happens when I am writing or have a project going. I just zone out and everything else takes a back seat.

Fun VS Seriousness

Music Ethics: Fun VS Seriousness

This topic is strictly debate. Do you take music serious or do you play an instrument to have fun? There is a line and in my humble opinion, good musicians can play jump rope with that line. I may be the only one with this view but that view helped me make friends and succeed with all of my musical goals. It is actually not hard to figure out the line and which side of it you need to be on.

For me music is everything from therapy to a way to meditate to a way to just get away from the rest of the world. That being said I take music very serious and try to respect the craft. Honestly I am only really serious when making decisions and things of that nature. The majority of the time I am having a blast. Playing music should really be that, playing. I try to be excited and curious about everything that pertains to music.

During writing, planning and business time are the only real point where I get down to business and get things done. During writing and recording for my release, Against All Odds I didn’t start getting serious until about halfway through. It wasn’t until the first song “A King in my Mind” was done that everything started becoming real. About this point is the same time that I got the idea for the current project I am working. I try to be serious away from the studio because it just kills my vibe.

I truly believe that being and artist is like being a small child. You should be curious and question EVERYTHING! If this way isn’t working try another way. When I was working on odds I was just trying to find a handle. I was learning, I am still learning. The best part is that the insecurity also fuels the curiosity. Why not hang on to that?

There are people that take music serious to a point where it stucks the life out of the music. I have practiced countless hours on the drums. I can do everything I was and I am still learning things. That’s came at a cost and that is putting music out there. The first recordings I was a part of were horrid. At one point we used a computer mic, just terrible. There is a Dave Grohl quote going aroubd that really says that you need to suck in the beginning. It’s called paying your dues. As time progresses things always get better.

I don’t understand this mentality. Why does everthing have to be perfect? We make mistakes. I know for a fact that Odds was full of them. Rather than obsessing and damping my enjoyment I released the work. I just made note about the problems so I don’t do it again. The mistakes should not hold you back. Just learn from the imperfections.

Backlining

Music ethics part 5 : Backlining

If you have ever been to a concert of any sort you have had wait in between sets. It is unavoidable but

can be fixed. Many of the local bands I have seen don’t understand this. The concept is simple. Its

called back lining or back loading. What you do is set up and have everything ready at least 2 bands

before you go on. For bands getting off stage, get everything off stage, then tear down. When I was

playing shows I hated waiting that 30 extra minutes because some young band didn’t understand how

to play a show. This isn’t something new. All of the major bands and festivals do it. On Ozzfest if the

band wasn’t on time it ate away at their set time. Either way you got off stage at the same time. Here

are some things that I have found that help the bands stage transition.

1. All band members should help with equipment. This is fundamental! I can’t stress it enough. You are

a band, family, friends and business partners. Step up and help the guitarist with loading his amp, the

bassist with his strap or the drummer move his cymbal 2 inches to the left.

2. Guitarists, if you can have one backup. There have been more than one occasion where my guitarist

broke a string and had to restring in the middle of the show. Having a back up guitar allows you to

easily switch it out and it won’t eat up your set time. Of course this is less likely to happen if you have

new or newer strings on your guitar for the show.

3.Drummers, DO NOT try and change how your drums are set up at a show. Try to get it as close to

your rehearsal set up as possible. Why? Because muscle memory. It’s real. When you change the set up

you have to think more, sometimes that can hurt a show and waste time trying to fix it in the show.

4. Promoters, if you can’t or won’t encourage back lining and organization at a show, why are you

putting it on. You are responsible for making sure that these shows are the best they can be. Fans hate

waiting. Stop acting like amateurs and run a show right. Basically what I am trying to say is that many

if not all of the local shows I have seen in the past have been to relaxed. You can party and mingle after

your set but this needs to been done to make more professional type shows. If you act like professionals

more promoters will see that and there will more shows thrown your way. Plus doing this leaves an

impression on the fans there too. A band that set up quick, give a great performance and then gets of

stage quick is great in my book.

My Dream Band

Music Ethics Part 4 : My Dream Band

Firstly let me start by saying that I am a metalhead. I was raised on 80s hair metal and new wave until

about 3 years old. At that time my step father brought in the heavier music like Pro-Pain, Sepultura and

Slayer. My two favorite bands are Pantera and Five Finger Death Punch. I have a form of each tattooed

on my person because I feel they are that big of a piece of my life.

If you are like me you became a musician because of seeing and or hearing a musician that strikes a

cord within you. I saw Vinnie Paul in the “Cemetery Gates” video and I was sold. I was three and I

never looked back. This, however is just a formality. As you grow you develop your personality. It is

that way in music too. I took everything I listened to and made it into one big mess that I call mine.

Another thing that happens along the way is that you hear that one band that you would model

everything around. Sometimes that same band is everything that you want in a band. The way the

music hits the groove just everything screams what you want to make your band produce.

For the longest time I modeled my playing after Vinnie Paul because of the groove. As time has gone

on it have become second nature. The thing is I recently realized that my dream band would not be

Pantera. The band closest to my goals would be another Texas band called Drowning Pool. I have been

a huge fan for years. From the beginning they were always amazing and I loved what I heard. I love the

groove of the vocals(especially on the new cd called Resilience and Sinner their debut). The guitars and

bass are just incredible. Mike Luce their drummer is a drummer that is closest to my style of playing. It

is just the kind of band that I want to be in and write music for. They walk the fine line of hard rock and

heavy metal( the old definitions). I try to be in bands that play jump rope with that line because that is

where you can expand into so many other genres and produce great albums that don’t sound the same.

That is extremely important to me and is a huge reason why I don’t often listen to death metal. It begins

to sound the same after a few songs.

Covers VS Originals

Music Ethics part 3: Covers vs. Originals

I was talking to a couple of friends the other day. The question of doing covers came up. I am not

exactly opposed to the idea but it is a touchy subject for me. Let me explain; I have only played one

cover in my career, it was played in a live setting twice and never again. The song was actually “Three

Little Pigs” by Green Jelly. It was a song that nobody would have expected from the band and it was

amazing seeing the reaction of the crowd and other bands. We actually invited the other bands onstage

during the song. The whole song everyone was just bouncing around and having a great time. It was

actually one of my favorite memories to think about.

The reason it was a one time thing is that I am not into playing covers in a live setting. I tried it and I

just do not feel it like I do with my own songs. I can’t explain it other than I am not a good actor. I do,

however, play a lot of covers when I am by myself practicing. It gives me a way to warm up and

practice flip trips and other visual stuff for the drums. I believe that covers are a fake form of

musicianship. Whether or not it is done for fun or a respect thing it is like painting by numbers. The

blue print is already there so all you have to do is mimic what was already done. I like that for a

practice or warmup session because it really is brainless movement because you know the beats from

listening to the song a million times.

For me one of the hardest things I have done in life was create a song. Jamming helps but making it

groove and making the song sound individual is difficult. I have done it many times but it still becomes

nerve wrecking. As for playing them live, that is where you see what the musician is made of. For the

musician you have to let go and bear it all. Sometimes it is hard and scary but it is the beauty of music.

You are being vulnerable, showing the people what is really inside.

Now I know that there have been may people that have become YouTube famous because of their

covers and all that. Good for them, but I still don’t know why they don’t make an effort to make their

own songs. It just seems like a massive was of talent, in my opinion. I hope that I am not offending

anyone because There are many that are great musicians but pour their focus into music that is not their

own. It is just not something that I see as productive. It was actually one of the things that I hated about

school band and drum line. The music was another persons creation not mine. How would that person

know who I am or how I would write my part?

Helping Out

Music Ethics Part 2 : Helping out

I know that I am very rough around the edges. I know many things for a fact but it is only music that

really counts for me. The last post was about people saying that music was their life but having no idea

what that really means. This one is about giving back. I completely believe in giving back whether is is

for something you love of to the community as a whole. As I have said before and will say again I have

been fortunate to do the things I have done and continue to do in music. This is something that I can not

allow myself to downplay. I am still just a kid from Tulare CA. The town that hosts the biggest

agricultural show in the world. Other than that nothing happens but I made things that I wanted

materialize.

I believe that I am also at a point where I could give back to music for all that it has given me. I talk

music with whoever will take the time to listen, I review music and give my opinions on the tracks for

local bands that want it, I generally try to help people that are looking for it. I just feel that if you have

the knowledge or ability you could help out somewhere even if it is a one time thing. One thing that I

have noticed in local music scenes is that there is a lot of two-faced people and back biting. Why is this

needed? Truth be told when I was younger there were rumors stated that caused petty feuds with other

bands. It just hinders the entire thing that you are trying to do. I also had people hide numbers of

promoters, venues and other bands from me. It was done to stop me from advancing . I still don’t know

the mentality and processing behind this. Granted I understand that there are “company secrets” but not

with EVERY single thing pertaining to the band. People need to get off their high horse and meet other

with an opened hand instead of a closed fist. It is counterproductive for everyone involved.

I was recently asked to record a young local band. This is an honor because they trust me to translate

their music into recordings. They are young guys having a good time so why not? Budget? No need to

know. Why? If I had someone offer me a free 4 song demo back when I started I would have gone nuts.

Why? Because opportunities do not happen that easy. I have had to work extremely for the better part

of 10 years to get where I am at. I have made my opportunities by making relationships and keeping

them intact. For reasons still unknown to me people tend to like me a lot so that was the easy part. The

thing is that it is not hindering me in any way. It is helping and I could see that they were grateful. This

goes straight back to giving back and helping out. They are doing the same thing that I am, I just have

more experience in the matter.

So back to my point. Help out your fellow musicians! If it is giving them a number for a promoter or a

review or just backing them when it is needed, great, It helps more than you know. In this instance the

sentiment also comes back many times. Fortunately, I am now the one trying to give the tricks and tips

to them youngsters. Just remember we are all in this together

Music is Life

Music Ethics Part 1: Music is life

In light of recent conversations I have had I have decided to put my opinion about music in to a blog series because, well, I can. Love it or hate it this is my opinion and my feelings. You do not need to read if this offends you because I could care less. One of the things that bother me to no end is these random people that say “Music is life”. More specifically the people who are not musicians that say that phrase over and over like some day it will actually be true. They have no idea what it means. Granted I know and I believe in the power of music but how do you know that music is life unless you have lived it. I got my first drum set in February of 2003. That means that I have been playing rock and metal for almost a decade. Before that I was in the band in school and that was for 5 years. Almost 15 years of my life dedicated to learning all that I can about my craft. What have they done in that time listened? Judged? Critiqued on things they do not understand? (This goes into my hatred for anyone talking down certain bands and their change of sound on CDs. That is for a different time and requires a whole lot more therapy.)

 

• You have not made music your life until you work all day to go home and practice until you sleep.
• You have not lived music until you have been emotionally invested in a project.
• You have not lived music until you would give all the extras that you have to buy one more piece of equipment.
• You have not lived music until the staged felt like a childhood home with all of those old feelings rushing back.
• You have not lived music until you have been woke up in the middle of the night because the part you were just working on clicked and you had to get it do before you forget.
• You have not lived music until you played a show with a broken bone, without screwing it up. (true story ask James Coffman)

 

The list can go on forever with just the little things that I have done, experienced and seen others do in the past decade.  The bottom line and the point that I am trying to make is that phase, “Music is Life” should only be applied to people that live it. Frankly I take it as an insult when I see these people saying it and wearing shirts that say it.  The reason being is it is so easy to say those words but the actions and gravity of those words are a different story. In music there are going to be a million times where things do not pan out, and a million more that just fall to pieces but getting back up is what you have to do. When you live music it is not something that you can go with out for a few days. You have to have it because you cannot like without that part of you. Music and the feeling that it brings is want you strive for. If you have not felt that you have no clue what “Music is Life” really means.
